Summer Solstice

Today was the longest day of the year.  It was also a belated birthday celebration for my mom, so we enjoyed an outdoor summer solstice birthday dinner!

My sister and I had our mom in mind for every aspect of the meal.  First, we picked up a few of her favorite items from Freddy’s, a local Italian market in Cicero.  If you live in the Chicago area and enjoy authentic Italian cuisine, check out Freddy’s!

Freddy’s is always busy, the staff is a little bit sassy but very helpful, and the food is worth the trip there!

They carry a wide variety of products — from dried pasta to cured meats, hot pizza to refreshing Italian ice, fluffy homemade gnocchi to crusty bread.  While I was waiting in line one of the staff members insisted that I try a few samples of their homemade Italian ice, which was perfect for a hot day like today!

My sister hosted tonight, and Gavin & Hudson were the ideal entertainers for the evening. 🙂

To start off the celebration, we had my mom’s favorite drink — a cosmo!

The guys stuck with beer.  And, we discovered another set of twins!

They both showed up wearing the exact same outfit.

For dinner, we feasted on Freddy’s gnocchi & vodka sauce, caprese salad, and lemon chicken — all favorites of my mom!

Last but not at all least, the birthday cake!  Julie picked up a beautiful cake from Toni Marie’s Bakery in Hinsdale.  It was white chocolate mousse cake served with ice cream and raspberry sauce. Yum!

It was a delicious meal enjoyed with the perfect company.  This has literally been the longest day ever, and I’m so thankful for my family!
